Meet the Team: Pauline, Technical Project Manager

What do you do at Spektrix? Technical Project Manager

What were you doing before you joined Spektrix?

I was a Technical Project Manager for a bank (BNP Paribas) in Hong Kong where I was working on IT projects to maintain the APAC (Asia Pacific) trading platform. Before that, I worked for a FinTech company which brought me to Hong Kong to launch their APAC branch. I was responsible for client facing projects but since we were only two people in Hong Kong, I did a bit of everything - even some marketing.

How did you get started in tech?

I hesitated to choose between sciences and photography, but I wanted a job that would let me explore several aspects of the business world. I chose to study industrial engineering because it gives you a very good overview of the whole creation process behind a product.

What made you want to join Spektrix?

I wanted to join a smaller company to benefit from the start-up spirit but with a structure similar to Spektrix. Also, as I’ve always been interested in the arts sector, Spektrix represented a good mix of arts and technology.

What is a typical week like for you?

At Spektrix, Monday is all about updating the company on the engineering team’s progress. Then during the middle of the week, I focus on improving processes, as well as providing ad-hoc support to various teams. The end of the week is when we discuss the statuses of our projects and try to solve any issues we’re having.

What are the challenges you face?

Trying to make sure that people are raising their ideas and concerns, while also setting expectations for them can be tricky to balance. I try to make sure I’m never pushing my solutions onto the team, but instead that we’re all working together to solve issues.

What’s your favourite part of working at Spektrix?

I really like having a lot of freedom on project management methodology and tools and of course, working with very skilled co-workers.

Traditionally, women are often underrepresented in technology companies. What advice would you give young women starting a career in tech and development?

Focus on your skills more than on the fact that you’re a woman but do be aware of the gender bias. If you work for a company where sexism is the norm and they don’t want to do anything about it, don’t waste your energy - quit and join Spektrix! Use the interview process to understand if the company treat women and men equally. For example, did you meet any women during the process? Are the managers all men? Does the company encourage flexible working hours? These are all really important things to consider.

What are you most proud of in your career so far?

At my first job, I was told by the engineering team that it wasn’t possible to implement a functionality I wanted to provide to our clients. I coded a prototype to prove it was feasible and it worked. By doing this, it brought me a lot of respect from the development team.

If you weren’t at Spektrix, what else do you think you’d be doing?

Launching my own company.

What’s your favourite thing to do in London? 

Attending a dance performance with a pint of beer (because it’s not something you can do in France!).
