As expectations on arts and live event organisations evolve, many are looking for practical ways to strengthen those connections, deepen engagement, and turn first-time attenders into long-term supporters.

In this article, Jane Whitty, Senior Consultant at Capacity, shares three practical approaches that can help strengthen audience loyalty without requiring significant additional investment, drawing on examples from organisations across the arts and culture sector.

Tools to strengthen audience loyalty at your organisation

           Engage your audiences

Use first-party data to build on existing relationships

In a changing tracking and privacy landscape, first-party data is key. We’ve probably all heard the term “first-party data,” but what are we talking about really? Put simply, it’s information your organisation already has through its direct relationship with audiences. This includes all of the information in your CRM, like ticket buyer data or contact information for people who’ve signed up for your email lists. It also includes actions people take on your website.

First-party data helps organisations understand their audience beyond individual transactions and explore more effective and purposeful arts marketing ideas. When paired with thoughtful and effective audience segmentation, those insights can lead to more relevant communications, stronger relationships, and, ultimately, greater loyalty. When organisations understand their audience better, they can create more relevant experiences at every stage of the relationship, which can help strengthen retention over time.

In a recent subscription campaign for New York City Ballet, we used their first-party audience data to segment our targeting based on past buying behaviour. In this paid Facebook and Instagram campaign, we ran three CRM segments: one reaching unrenewed subscribers, one reaching multi single ticket buyers, and one reaching those who purchased a single ticket in the past. We then tailored communications to reflect each audience segment’s existing relationship with the organisation, recognising that different people may need different information, encouragement, or opportunities to engage.

In the post aimed at unrenewed subscribers, we could assume some familiarity with City Ballet because these audience members had subscribed before. That allowed us to focus less on introduction and more on rekindling excitement, with messaging that emphasised flexibility and encouraged people to return.

Post 1: Unrenewed subscribers

For past single ticket buyers, the approach was slightly different. Because this audience was earlier in its relationship with the organisation, the messaging spent more time highlighting the benefits of subscribing, while the call to action emphasised a discount to encourage the next step.

Together, these campaigns reflect something many organisations recognise instinctively: people need different things at different stages of their relationship with you. Recognising those differences can help organisations create more relevant experiences, strengthen audience loyalty, and build better connections.

Post 2: Single ticket buyers

While first-party data can help strengthen existing audience relationships, it can also support audience growth. Lead generation campaigns on Facebook and Instagram can be a valuable way to connect with people who are interested in your work and begin building a direct relationship. Often, it starts with a simple exchange: someone shares their contact details because they’d like to hear more.

Build audience loyalty from day one

This example from 1812 Productions highlights how they use paid social campaigns tto connect with people interested in hearing more about upcoming productions. When we launched our single ticket campaign for The Play that Goes Wrong, we incorporated those new leads as a segment. Before that, the team at 1812 Productions sent welcome emails and other dedicated communications to introduce people to the organisation and start building a relationship from the very first interaction.

It’s a simple approach, but an important one. By starting the conversation early, organisations can help new audience members feel connected long before they make their next purchase, creating the foundations for stronger audience relationships long term.

Message benefits and features

It’s easy to talk about what you offer. What’s often harder — but far more effective — is showing people why it matters to them. That’s where benefits-focused messaging comes in. It connects what an organisation offers with the experiences, interests, and needs of its audience.

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art wanted to invest in building deeper audience loyalty within their local communities. Capacity’s content team helped create this post for Crystal Bridges Museum, an excellent example of how benefits-focussed content can help solve a problem for your audience and increase their loyalty. By focusing on audience needs first, the messaging helps people see how a visit could fit naturally into their lives and that sense of relevance gives people clearer reasons to engage again in the future.

The campaign addressed a familiar challenge: finding a staycation option that genuinely offers something for everyone. By highlighting the variety of experiences available at Crystal Bridges, the messaging positioned a visit as an easy, local solution. In this post, we used an image carousel to highlight everything available in a visit to Crystal Bridges, and the copy called out the benefit right at the top. We didn’t tout the features of Crystal Bridges alone; we identified a consumer problem and explained how the organisation can help solve that problem.

When Santa Fe Opera was developing a paid campaign for its subscription packages, the team recognised that listing features alone wouldn’t be enough to build loyalty. Instead, we worked together to focus on what audiences would gain from being a subscriber and why that experience might matter to them.

The campaign focused on the value of being part of the season from the start, highlighting the benefits of planning ahead and staying connected to the work audiences care about most.

Highlight your mission to build loyalty

Some of the strongest audience relationships are built on shared values. For many organisations, their mission helps audiences understand not only what they do, but why that work matters and why it’s worth supporting. In a recent article from Know Your Own Bone, researcher Colleen Dilenschneider shared data on the crucial role your mission plays in sustained loyalty.

Members and subscribers whose primary membership benefits are supporting and positively impacting the mission indicate as most likely to make additional donations.

Colleen Dilenschneider

In other words, when people understand the impact of your work and feel connected to it, they’re often more inclined to deepen their support.

Beyond that, this same article found that over 60% of these same members state they are likely to review their memberships in the next year. That’s much higher than those that list ‚priority access‘ or ‚free access‘ as their primary member benefit.

So how do you bring your mission to life in a way that feels meaningful and engaging? American Ballet Theatre (ABT) ran a mission-focussed campaign to connect with their audience outside of their touring season. In a series of videos, ABT highlighted the impact of their mission on the lives of dancers in their company.

The content was shared with both new and highly engaged audiences. By telling mission-led stories throughout the year, ABT created opportunities to stay connected with audiences even when performances weren’t taking place.

As a result, when year-end fundraising communications were launched, audiences had already spent months engaging with stories that reinforced the impact and purpose behind ABT’s work.

Building audience loyalty requires consistency

There’s rarely a single campaign, message, or offer that creates audience loyalty overnight. More often, it grows through a series of positive interactions that help people feel connected to your organisation over time. Mission-led engagement can also strengthen audience retention, helping organisations maintain meaningful connections between key moments of engagement.

Whether you’re using first-party data to create more relevant communications, focusing on benefits that matter to your audience, or sharing stories that bring your mission to life, the goal is the same: building stronger audience relationships that encourage people to return, engage, and support your work.

The organisations highlighted here show that loyalty doesn’t always come from doing something radically different. More often, it comes from understanding your audience, communicating with purpose, and consistently showing people why your organisation matters to them.

To learn more about Capacity and the strategies discussed here (among others) please visit their website or follow their news on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn.

Successful examples of paid social media marketing campaigns for theatres and arts centres, segmented to promote subscriptions, ticket sales and affinity.

[45,120

post-855","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-marketing","category-sector-insights
["GET
