A child arrives on a school trip, grows up, comes back 20 years later with children of their own, and returns once more, slower and better dressed, with grandchildren. Build the habit early, and life stage leans in to give our marketing activities a lift. Plenty of strategies have been built on that arc, and for decades it had the decency to be broadly true.

Over the past year Baker Richards has been commissioned by the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions to test how much of it still holds. In 2025 we researched the family market. In 2026 we turned to adults aged 35 to 54 without dependent children at home – now the fastest-growing household type in both the UK and North America. A third study, into the over-60s, is on its way. Between the first two we have a reasonably full picture of two of the largest audience groups for cultural and visitor attractions, and much of it will be recognisable to theatres and multi-arts venues as well as museums, galleries, and other attractions.

For a wider view of changing audience motivations and practical ways to respond, explore the Spektrix audience engagement guide.

           Understand, Engage, and Grow Your Audience

Families are still the engine for attractions – but for how long?

The family study drew on a census-balanced panel of 1,063 UK adults who regularly care for children under 16. Strikingly, nearly three-quarters have less than £200 a month to cover all their leisure, and yet 62% will typically spend more than £100 on a single day out. The visit is saved for, perhaps made once or twice a year. Our research found that visits split roughly 60/40 between free places and paid ones, so free sites have an important place in the plans for families. Families are spending deliberately, in bigger and rarer chunks, with a clear sense of what they expect in return.

What they expect is perhaps obvious, but very important – their children’s enjoyment, and the memories that come out of it. Dwell time usually matters less to them than the quality of what happens while they are with you. The economic engine of an attraction rests on creative people making and delivering experiences worth remembering – commercial strength follows from that, rather than running alongside it, or being incidental.

Which brings us to the family ticket – we have previously found, and it was confirmed in this research, that the family ticket has aged badly. 41% of our respondents said it usually works out cheaper for them. An identical 41% said it rarely matches the shape of their family. Single parents, blended households, multi-generational groups, carers who are not parents… It’s long been understood that the 2+2 assumption excludes a large slice of the market at the precise moment they are deciding whether to buy, but our research indicates that offering a range of pre-determined options can be similarly exclusive.

Prevalence of special educational needs

In our sample, 41% of families include a child with special educational needs, or who needs extra help with learning or development. Those families are likely to return more readily when they feel welcome.

49% start researching their day out two weeks or more ahead of the visit. 44% book within the final 48 hours. Marketing therefore has to do two jobs at two speeds – raising awareness and inviting consideration, inspiring people weeks out, before converting them the night before.

The fastest-growing households

There are around 7.6 million adults aged 35 to 54 in the UK with no dependent children at home, and that household type is on course to overtake households with children by 2030. Of these, 3.69 million are current attenders of attractions. They spend roughly £5 billion a year on discretionary leisure, of which visitor attractions currently capture somewhere between £400 and £500 million.

They are already engaged with culture. A quarter have been to a museum or gallery recently, and 17% to theatre, dance, opera, or a classical concert. Ask what is missing from their lives and they say rest and connection – which is a pretty good description of a day out. When we asked what stops them acting on it, cost was the top reply. The catch-all, confidently stated adage that “price is not the problem” can ring very hollow with these bookers.

The clearest illustration came from asking what these adults actually did on a recent free Saturday, then what they would have done with no money worries. In our sample, staying at home fell from 35% to 9%. Cultural visits rose from 7.5% to 22%. A third of respondents live alone, on a single income. The assumption that people without children have money going spare holds for some of them, but not all.

When it comes to this form of market segmentation, needs work best. We found four groups:

Sociables, who will pay more for atmosphere and food;

Explorers, who want something curated;

Restorers, the largest group, who want to switch off somewhere familiar;

Purists, who look most like the traditional cultural visitor and are the most price-sensitive of the four. Push ticket prices up, and the Purists drop out first. A standard adult admission of £25 to £40 sits comfortably inside the acceptable range.

Two findings about belonging should be acknowledged – 24% say a venue that feels aimed at families would put them off, while only 14% have walked away for that reason, which suggests the fix is usually about signalling that adults are welcome rather than building a separate adult programme. More seriously, 20% have felt actively unwelcome at a visitor attraction, and neurodivergent visitors were 1.9 times more likely to say so.

For more on helping people feel they belong, explore what the arts can learn from sports fandom.

So – what to do with the data so far?

Read together, the two studies describe a sector that may expect life stage alone to provide a reason to return. For families this expectation is stronger – children’s enthusiasm really does drive the next visit, though only if the household can see itself in the ticket and in the welcome. Adults without children are harder won, but are the fastest-growing households in the UK and US.

Practically, that means:

Rebuilding the family ticket around households as they actually are, and pricing for variable party size.

Treating accessibility as a volume market and publishing what you offer before anyone has to ask for it.

Running family marketing at two speeds, inspiring weeks out and converting in the final 48 hours.

Signalling that adults without children are expected here, with adult faces in the photography and some times of day that are not school-holiday noisy.

Programming should be built to encourage frequency rather than for a single splash.

For Spektrix users it also means embracing the email and other segmentation tools available to you – retiring the single campaign sent to everybody.

The full reports are free to
