Great British Summer Savings: VAT relief with Spektrix
UK families received welcome news with the 21 May announcement of the Great British Summer Savings: Family Activities VAT Relief scheme. By temporarily reducing VAT from 20% to 5% on some goods and services for children and families, the government aims to make live, in-person experiences more accessible this summer.
At Spektrix, we welcome initiatives that help make these experiences available to more people. Theatres, museums, visitor attractions, and other cultural organisations play an important role in bringing people together, strengthening communities, and creating opportunities for connection. Research also suggests that early exposure to arts and cultural experiences can help foster lifelong engagement, making access for children and families especially important.
For organisations, however, the timeline is tight. The scheme applies to eligible events taking place from 25 June, leaving only a short time to prepare.
That's why we moved quickly following the Chancellor's announcement to update Spektrix so different ticket types can be taxed at different rates. These changes were rolled out automatically to all Spektrix organisations on Monday 1 June, making it easy for users to apply the reduced VAT rate and comply with the new requirements.
Once the update is available, users can configure the reduced VAT rate in just a few minutes. For step-by-step guidance, read our Support Centre article.
What is the Great British Summer Savings 2026: Family Activities VAT Relief scheme?
Between 25 June and 1 September 2026, some goods and services will be subject to a reduced VAT rate of 5%. These include child tickets for theatre and cinema, children's meals, and all admission tickets – including adult tickets – to visitor attractions.
To confirm whether your organisation is eligible, and which event and ticket types are included, read the government fact sheet.
Changes like this can create valuable opportunities for organisations and audiences alike, but only if they're straightforward to implement. In a sector where policy, audience expectations, and operating conditions can change quickly, organisations need technology that can adapt just as fast.
Our ability to deliver these updates within days of the announcement reflects the way Spektrix is built: continuously improving, responsive to change, and designed to help organisations act with confidence. By removing the administrative burden of adapting to new requirements, we're helping clients focus on what matters most: welcoming more families through their doors and creating the experiences that inspire, entertain, and bring people together.
